Dumb SEO Questions

Suggestions for dealing with Penguin and site-wide links.

Can any one help me because posting in google webmaster forum has proved to be a waste of time no one answers

My website got hit by penguin for site wide links from several blogs back in may for over use of anchor text, the irony of the matter is  the blogs are not even mine but fortunately through discussion with the webmasters of the blogs the offending anchor text was removed over 2 months ago but the site shows no imminent signs of recovery and has all but disappeared in serps.
It seems that you are better of having a manual penalty imposed because once hit by penguin it would appear that you have to wait until the next update b4 any thing can potentially happen.
can any one offer any help or suggestions as to anything else we can do?
Luke

  • Jim Munro: Luke's site is www carpetcleaningleighonsea co uk/
  • Carl Harvey: I've had a quick look and other people are far better than me to tell you what you are doing wrong but i would remove the links in your text as it looks spammy to begin with & you need to do more no page optimization...maybe move the menu to the top & add social media links...sorry i can't be of more help
  • John Coleman: You said the anchor text has been removed, do you mean the links have been removed? Or has the anchor text been changed and the links are still live? Check out webmaster tools and see if the sitewide blog links are still being indexed, look at disavowing them and any other links that are shady - hint disavow domains that are crappy. +Carl Harvey ;makes a good point about the on page links looking spammy, I dunno if they are causing any issues but they look awful. ;
  • Richard Hearne: The main problem is that you've made a major assumption as to why you were hit:

"My website got hit by penguin for site wide links from several blogs back in may for over use of anchor text"

Having looked at your backlinks I think the problem is simply that most of them are low quality or outright spam. I would definitely remove links on carpet cleaning blogs and the like, especially ;carpet-cleaner-essex.co.uk and ;carpetcleaners-essex.co.uk. There's not a good natural link in there IMO.

Your anchor text is really skewed also:
1 carpet cleaning leigh on sea
    2 www.carpetcleaningleighonsea.co.uk
3 carpet cleaners leigh on sea
    4 luke
5 carpet cleaners  ;leigh on sea
6 leigh on sea on sea
    7 luc
8 carpet cleaning in leigh on sea

    9 www.carpetcleaningleighonsea.co.uk/in...
    10 www.carpetcleaningleighonsea.co.uk/ol...

Being honest though removing these links is very unlikely to help. Unless you can get some half decent links to your site (which means a lot of hard work) I'd be inclined to suggest you start again with a new domain and do it right this time. If you cant afford to invest in content and a proper brand then perhaps Adwords will work best for you.
  • Nishant Desai: Hello,

I really think you need to build lot of quality back links and remove the bad ones.  ;Also agree with +Richard Hearne ; to either go with new domain or go with adword campaigns for quicker results.

    Thanks.
  • Sasch Mayer: Hey Luke... Can you link to the thread over in the Webmaster Central Forum?
  • Duncan Gillespie: Hey Luke try blasting out a few more unnatural links using non keyword anchor text like click here , this site, source, etc etc.  ;I know it sounds dodgy but it has been working.

    If your not comfortable with "blasting using software then just go and comment on heaps of relevant blogs using your name as link not anchor text.  ;

As said above you need to diversify that anchor text.

Actually after looking at your site I would also suggest buying another exact match  ;keyword domain and installing wordpress and starting again. Your site has no real authority ;http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/
So you have little to lose that you have not already lost. Also a nice wordpress theme will convert at a much higher rate than the design you currently have!

    Good Luck!!
  • Luke Bradley: +Duncan Gillespie ;thanks mate I have been thinking about a word press site for some  ;time and I have pretty much changed all the offending anchor as shown on open site explorer to a much more varied links but as I understand it Google have shafted you until they update the algorithm and if I was to start again surely it takes time to get back to a reasonable placing in serps
  • Luke Bradley: +John Coleman ;the anchor text links were either deleted or changed in the case of changing anchor text the links are still live and they have all been reindexed and the on page links are my other sites is it wrong to link to them?
  • Luke Bradley: +Richard Hearne ;hi richard thanks for taking the time taken to reply  ;but Google analytics's showed a clear drop in April/may and Ahrefs and open site explorer clearly showed that site wide links from blogs were the issue the point I am asking which no one seems to have an answer for is once these anchor text links are removed why are you still penalised by Google where as if you had had a written penalty you could have cleaned up where needed applied to have the penalty removed and hey presto you are back in serps again  ; this domain has gone of the Radar  ;its just not showing and even though I must acknowledge the website looks crap it had a respectable place on page 1 of serps for carpet cleaning and carpet cleaners Leigh on sea for 4 years and then just vanished I can not work it out
  • Luke Bradley: +Sasch Mayer ;Hi mate no problem the link is ;http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!mydiscussions/webmasters/VwtkB0_z_oI
  • Tim Capper: +Luke Bradley ; please listen to Richards advice, it is a solid as it comes.

My personal addition and i don't mean to offend:  ;would you purchase carpet cleaning from your site.

Create one site that offers a Good Purchasers experience

Carpet cleaning services - list different services

Blog - with tips, tricks, even a carpet glossary with your marks out 10 for easy cleaning.

    Now for the areas.

create pages for Areas these must all be unique to the area - provide map, provide some testimonials from mrs fisher - 10 long rd leigh on sea, mr cod - 11 short rd leigh on sea.

but dont try and spam keywords onto page.

Create categories for the area in your blog - every time you clean a carpet in that area - explain it, the problem, how you dealt with it, and before and after pictures.

over time you will build up authority
  • Luke Bradley: +Nishant Desai ;As I perceive it their is content but the layout of the site is crap and so are the back links so if thiis can be changed why a new domain? does that mean that the algorithmic penalty can not be removed?
  • Richard Hearne: +Luke Bradley ;going with a new domain will likely be quicker and a lot less work.  ;Removing algo penalties is just about the most difficult thing you'll ever do.  ;Even when you lift the algo penalty you're still left having to re-rank the site, and there are really no guarantees.
  • Bhupendra Rathore: I also agree with +Richard Hearne ..
going with a new domain will likely be quicker and a lot less work.
  • Luke Bradley: thanks  ;+Richard Hearne ; +Tim Capper ; +Bhupendra Rathore ; and all the other  ;lads for all the good advice I have had another look at iall your comments  ;after a sleep and in a nutshell you are saying the site is pants has poor/spammy  ;links and its better to start all over again ok what about the clients who know us under this name i know you can redirect a site but does this not impact apon the new one negatively?
  • Dave Elliott: did you actually receive a warning from Google about your link profile?
