If you are jittery about a link then "nofollow" it.

bharat thakare: +Rand Wilson Couldn't agree more. I think the concept of "link building" has to ; go. Moreover, businesses should stop worrying about do-follow links and rankings. They should focus on creating value for their customers and let the customers be their brand ambassadors. And create content that people would like to link to rather than linking to own website from blogs/articles.

The strategy is as it has been for a long time: Avoid keyword-rich links and don't go too fast.
The only thing new here is, that it is written into the guidelines - but it has been "accepted knowledge" for quite some time.
bharat thakare: I agree. Its been known for quite some time now. However, people tend to still follow such practices hoping Google won't notice. Publishing it under guidelines should help those who ignored it for such a long time.
