Would Google consider technical cloaking to be a guideline violation?

We would like to allow search engines to bypass an "Age Verification" check for a brewery website. Any opinions on whether Google would consider this to be a guideline violation? (Technically, this is "cloaking". We`re just hoping Google can exercise a little discrimination...)?

  • Glenn Ferrell: We would like to allow search engines to bypass an "Age Verification" check for a brewery website. Any opinions on whether Google would consider this to be a guideline violation? (Technically, this is "cloaking". We're just hoping Google can exercise a little discrimination...)
  • Ian Wortley: I suspect Google may we'll show some discrimination as a result of that, and that you won't like it when they do. What exactly are you trying to bypass?
  • Brent Wildman: +Ian Wortley ;I assume there's a verification page to make sure the user is of age to access the content. Since Google is unable to fill out the form to access the site it would not be able to crawl through to the site.
  • Jon Dunn: Its possible as you can have a script that detects user agent and when it's googlebot allow it in to crawl the site. But as you suggest, technically its cloaking.

    "First click free" does not apply either as you require age verification before seeing any content?
  • Ian Wortley: Ah, now I get it. Great question. I don't see what else you can do. I would hope there would be no negative outcome since it's just being responsible. I suppose the best outcome is that Google does flag it as cloaking but does a manual review where they realise it's actually a good thing in this instance ( without any penalty in the meantime). I'll be watching this question with interest.
  • John Coleman: could you block the page within a robots.txt file? ;
