Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Ross Barefoot on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 01/16/2014).

I`m seeing more comments where there is no backlink.

Blog Comment Spam without backlinks.    Ah, those blog comment spammers.  Always entertaining.  Usually transparent.  Except now I`m seeing more comments where there is no backlink.  Anyone know what they are up to?  Is the strategy to open dialog by getting a response from the blog publisher and then to put the backlink in a follow up?  Does anyone actually know??

  • Jon Dunn: Are you seeing made up words or random strings of numbers/letters? Sometimes spammers use that first to see what gets approved and then move onto linked spam in phase 2.
  • Brent Wildman: A lot of sites disable links in the blog comments so they either don't show up or are disabled.
  • Ross Barefoot: +Jon Dunn In this case the comments are meant to be intelligible. ; In the case of one I'm a bit conflicted about whether it's genuine or not so I replied and now I'm waiting to see if there's a follow up with a link in it, which would confirm that it was a trial balloon.
  • John Coleman: i've seen this too and it really is annoying. Sometime's I see them keyword stuffing their comments also but not sure how it could benefit them when there is no link
  • Monitor Backlinks: After their first comment gets approved...the next ones will automatically be approved by default. They are trying to get the first one approved, so they can leave a link on the 2nd comment.

You can change this from wordpress settings though

  • Ross Barefoot: +Monitor Backlinks Yup. ; Forgot about that little Wordpress setting, but it makes perfect sense. ; I'll see if this one gets a follow up. ; +W.E. Jonk Thanks for the link. ; Glad to see the panel picking it up as well.
