  • Lewis Barrs: Yo, wanted to ask if anyone has any experience of re directing numerous pages on one domain to several different domains. i.e domain 1 will be re directing to 5 separate domains. ;
  • Matt Raynes: hmmm, is this related to quantum physics?  ;Otherwise, I think one page you are trying to reach can only lead to you being redirected to another 1 other page.  ;I've redirected loads of pages in the past but never managed to redirect 1 page to several other domains using the usual redirect methods, I think. ;
  • Chris Hutchings: You can redirect individual pages to different domains, i.e Page 1 from domain 1 to a domain 2, page 2 from domain 1 to domain 3, page 3 from domain 1 to domain 4 etc.

    Is this what you mean?

    What website publisher are you using?
  • Lewis Barrs: +Chris Hutchings ; have you employed this method before without any negative effects? Would the publisher make any difference?
  • Chris Hutchings: Negative effects in what way? The search position of the original site?

    Would the publisher make any difference in what way?

    What are you trying to achieve by doing this?
  • Lewis Barrs: You asked what publisher, why would this make any difference?  ;If you have a page on domain 1 ranking well and you re direct this to domain 2 did you see the the new domain pick up from where domain 1 was ranking? Did you find that when you re directed the page, the recipient page struggled to rank or had a negative effect ( going down ) due to a manipulation of page rank??
  • Chris Hutchings: Sorry I meant publisher as in wordpress, joomla etc.
  • Lewis Barrs: Yes understand that, why would this make any difference to the effect of a page re direct??
  • Chris Hutchings: I haven't redirected for an SEO improvement in a few years but I do know people who still do.

    Currently I have seen both authority and penalties be passed across via redirects.

    This system can/does work but it depends on how much you like your sites and whether or not you are prepared to take the risk. For my clients and my own personal sites I don't really see the point as Google will catch up with it eventually.
  • Chris Hutchings: It wouldn't make any difference to the effect, just on some platforms it is easier to do than others, wordpress for example takes two seconds.
  • Lewis Barrs: Ahh I thought when you stated that it was okay to do, you had actually employed this method and had full knowledge of the procedure. The game has changed completely in the last 2 years so any data from here is irrelevant. ;

    If domain 1 is clean pointing to domain 2 which is clean then there should be no adverse reaction, the problem is if you are multiple re directing to different domains. Another point is that the recipient page will not rank unless all the links pointing to domain 1 are changed to domain 2, where as previously the switch was like for like!!
  • Chris Hutchings: I didn't say it was okay to do, I just said it was possible. And also that I hadn't done it in a few years for an SEO improvement.

    I worked on a site last year that split in to four different sites for genuine reasons and they redirected all the different pages to the corresponding pages on the new sites. They were all clean, saw no adverse reaction ; and now all rank in their own right.
  • Lewis Barrs: OK no worries, I may of got my wires crossed and appreciate your feedback. The main issue I have is that re directs as a whole are being stamped out as they can't get a grip on what is a trustworthy re direct and what is not. From my experience it is not passing any juice at all unless you change the links, then it seems pointless to contemplate this in the first place, unless you need existing visitors to push through to your new page. ;

    Out of interest was the four outbound re directs you had from the main domain in the same niche? I.E main domain solicitors going to family law/immigration/unfair dismissal etc.  ;
  • Chris Hutchings: They were yes, not amazingly dissimilar to your example!
