Dumb SEO Questions

What if I have more than one main keyword?

Here is my DUMB SEO question. :)

I was reading about how one should structure their website with keywords. Imagine that you have a blog and you want to make a structure that will rank your keywords well.

What I understand about it is the following:

I am going to use the dog training niche as an example.

Main Keyword:
Dog Training

Category Keywortds
Training for Puppies
Training for Adult Dogs
Training for Aggressive Dogs
Dog Behavior Training

Now you should write articles in each category using keywords related to the category keywords. This way you will rank also for your Main Keyword (Dog Training), . right?

What if you have more than one main keyword?

Thanks

  • Ahmed Khalifa: It's always difficult to stick to one main keyword but I suppose that's the challenge we must face all the time. One day is to focus the one article on the one keyword, and if you have more than one main keyword, create a separate article. That way, you can focus on one keyword at a time.
  • Justin Y: +Michael Mason good answer.
I'd say if you have more than one main keyword you'd probably want to do the same. Personally I think its best to optimize for one keyword only along with short and long-tail keyword phrases within the content that deep link to relevant pages. Those are my thoughts.
  • Michael Mason: Thanks +Justin Y. I think of it this way and this is how I explain it to our clients...

Let's assume you have 10 keywords that you REALLY want to optimise for. If you put them all on one page then Google will lend 10% relevance to each. I'm not forgetting Title, Description or content here by the way, they're all important.

So now let's assume you only put 2 keywords on that home page, Google will lend 50% relevance to each.

    Ergo: Less is more.
