  • Collin Davis: Your title and description tag should convey what your page is about. So even if it is different from the post title but still manages to convey what is the page is about, then it should not raise trust issues with the search engines.

However if you are just putting in keywords in order to make them rank with the page not being relevant for them, then you are raising suspicions in the eyes of the search engines.
  • Nathaniell Brenes: +Collin Davis ;Thanks. Yes, my intention would always be to have a relevant title. The only situation I can think of where I would need to do this would be the issue of length.

Of course, some might say I should just use a different post title, but writing for the reader, sometimes I feel long, creative, descriptive titles are appropriate; too bad they don't all fit in the SERPs
  • Justin Y: I don't think that's true, I think it's pretty common to write your titles differently if you ask me. I do it all the time especially when the original titles are too long or possibly considered as duplicate content. In my opinion I can see longer titles having a negative impact over optimizing and rewriting them to the exact character limit.
  • Collin Davis: +Nathaniell Brenes ; If you look at most websites like Moz or Search Engine Land, they carry the same meta title as that of the post.

I think there is another instance when it can be an issue. When you need to have keywords in the meta title tag in order that they may rank but then using the same in your post title tag wouldn't exactly be catchy or click worthy.
