How to deal with 404 errors and stop more producing?

404 error page question:
Just checking a wordpress site and I`ve found over 4000 404 errors!!

I`m not sure how this happened but the site appears to be date stamping pages or creating a new set of pages each month/year - see below...so there are a gazillion `fake` versions of every site page.

Does anyone know why this has happened and how to stop it? Also I need an easy way to get rid of 4000 404s :-O!

Martino Mosna: My guess is on a broken template. In order to get rid of the 404s, you just have to remove what caused them. Search engines will follow.

I have not heard of this before.
Kate Toon: well I've just rebuilt the site an uploaded the new one. So I'll leave it a week or so and see if the problem is still there. I haven't heard of it either!!
