Dumb SEO Questions

Is seo influenced by the cms used?

I am seeking expert`s advice. Is #seo   influenced by the #cms   used? We use #drupal   for our website. Is it possible that Drupal is unfavorable to good SEO?

If so, which CMS is the best to use (excluding plugins and all addable materials)?

Thanks in advance :)

  • Nishant Desai: Hello,

Wordpress is the best CMS for SEO.
  • Martino Mosna: No, drupal is good for SEO, it only has quite a steep learning curve, so you'll probably need an expert in order to make it work like it should do on the search engines.

WordPress is good right out of the box, but do not expect to rank higher only for the cms, because you will not.

I'll warn you only against home made cms... Because structural flaws and issues such as folder loops or sistematic 404s are not uncommon.

IMO you can stick with drupal and think ahead with your SEO strategy.
  • W.E. Jonk: In general it doesn't really matter because Googlebot does not look at the CMS being used, Googlebot only cares about what is served by the CMS. In that sense, any CMS will do.

That said, in Google Webmaster Tools you might get a message that your CMS is outdated. Google does this to make the web a better place. So in that sense it does care. But as far as I know there is no ranking benefits or crawling benefits due to a specific CMS.
  • Andrei Gherghel: Any cms can be customized and there is a large community and a lot of plugins for both drupal and wordpress. Just ask an drupal expert to optimize the website.
  • Stephanie Ewen: I am not a programmer but I work a lot with SEO for various companies. I have never heard of a #CMS  ;affecting ranking. However, you can check out this forum for more information. ;https://drupal.org/node/1923026
  • Justin Y: +Charles Ostiguy I think it's all about the speed and available options for optimizing. I don't think Google is out to favor particular CMS's, but I do think they favor sites that perform well and have all of the right pieces put into play.
  • S?awomir Zdunek: Personally I go for WordPress. Even Matt Cutts uses it for his blog. What could be a better recommendation :) I think all CMS systems need some extra tweaks to limit duplicate content problems (for example). What is more stats show that over 50 websites out of first 100 in SERPs (using some kind of CMS system) use WordPress. These are the facts.
I agree that the content is the most important and the very CMS doesn't decide about the ranking position and doesn't give any ranking boost.
  • Charles Ostiguy: Thanks to all of you guys, much appeciated! I'll keep your comments in mind :)
  • Shane Walker:
    Hi Charles,
CMS can definitely affect the rankings of a site. The reason any CMS would negatively affect the rankings of a site is if it provided things like a bad user experience, slow load times or lots of broken internal links so that Google has trouble crawling it and indexing it. I find that of all my clients, the ones I have the easiest success with rankings use wordpress. For some reason Google seems to like it and I think it's the way that the pagination is set up within the site. It is easy to crawl and it follows along in a logical path. There's also a lot of plug-ins, etc, that can be used to help the SEO. All in all, regardless of whatever CMS your using, your really must have it set-up so it's easy to be crawled, set up in a logical sequence and loads quickly and provides a good user experience because Google also takes into account time on site and bounce rate. I hope this helps.

    Regards
