How can I fix custom css?

My simple website is taking 7 seconds to load. I used this website to show what was taking so long, and it turns out it`s the custom CSS. How can I fix this?   http://www.webpagetest.org/result/130714_Z9_WCD/1/details/

  • Andrei Gherghel: It seems that the css killing your loading time is empty. I just checked from mt smartphone. Sorry, i'm not at the computer to help you more. Also see http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/bYZFy0/raymondduke.com . Also try to remove the css file because its empty (actually not empty but no useful content for the page)
  • Raymond Duke: I deleted all the content on the CSS because I thought it would help. I'll delete the file now, too. ;
  • Raymond Duke: Hmm. Seems I made a big error. Now my website looks like garbage. ;
  • Raymond Duke: okay, turns out it was a pluggin that caused that problem of removing the css of the site. I still have the issue with slow loading.
  • Raymond Duke: Times like this make me hate wordpress and web development. Why can't it be simple? I'll have to look at this later, I have other work to do now.
  • Andrei Gherghel: Yes, it looks like garbage but it loads in less than a second :) try to find an alternative plugin.
  • Raymond Duke: It should look correctly now. Even though I deleted the pluggin, it took several minutes for the proper design to come back. ;
  • Raymond Duke: It's loading within 3 seconds now, too. I guess that's okay. I still think it should be faster though since it's basically just text with some small pictures. ;
  • Andrei Gherghel: Go to http://seoeta.com/website-speed/ and check you domain. There are several tips for improvements. Although, it seems that the css is still delaying the load.
  • Justin Y: +Raymond Duke I can see that a plugin would cause this more than css. I think it's usually best to combine your css into one file and remove all blank lines when it is an option. Most plugins that include custom css hook into the wp head. Those are my thoughts.

    Here are some tips I posted a few weeks ago to help speed up WordPress sites by compressing css, reducing plugins etc. No self promotion, this is just some useful
    info that I created for WP site owners. http://chompdigital.com/speed-up-wordpress-better-for-seo/

  • Milos Kostadinovic: Hi, ;

    You can also test your site's speed by using http://gtmetrix.com/. This one is similar to seoeta, already mentioned in the comment by +Andrei Gherghel ;
  • Raymond Duke: Thank you everyone for the responses and help so far. There were several flags raised on my site that I found when I used those apps. I'm going to have to try and figure out how to fix them. ;
  • Raymond Duke: Hmm, as of this morning my site is taking a few minutes to load. I didn't make any changes to it. WordPress is a WordMess...
  • Andrei Gherghel: While testing the load of your website I noticed a random high time to first byte ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_To_First_Byte). This could flag some server problems caused by a high memory load. You could also check with your hosting provider. I also had high ttfb some weeks ago and it was a hardware failure. try to disable all plugins and if it still loads very slow than it most probably isn't a wordpress related problem.
