Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Jim Newberry on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 04/02/2014).

I changed my location info on my site and social media sites.

I`m a photographer who was happy to have first page Google results for "chicago photographer." I`ve since moved to L.A. though, and although 2 or 3 weeks ago I changed my location info on my site and social media sites, etc. I noticed that I`m still on the first page (despite the title and description saying "Los Angeles") for that search, but not getting results for "los angeles photographer."

I know it takes time for Google to process this, and there might be more competition in LA, and I was long associated with Chicago--I understand this isn`t going to be easy, but am curious if anyone has advice about anything I can do to expedite things and/or improve my LA ranking. (By the way I don`t have a retail, on-site location)?

  • Jim Newberry: I'm a photographer who was happy to have first page Google results for "chicago photographer." • Jim Munro: Jim's site is jimnewberry(dot)com. Looks great. :)

    This (and your blog site) both ooze quality and Google obviously loves them. I think googlebot might eventually learn your new location but +Alistair Lattimore ;and/or +Tim Capper, or maybe someone else here, will be sure to have a more-useful opinion.
  • Jim Newberry: Thanks Jim, good to hear I'm on the right track. If it helps, here's my G+ business page: ;https://plus.google (dot) com/109222872619292547415
    (feel free to delete if I'm not supposed to post that link even disabled)
  • Jim Munro:
    I am sorry that we have to be pedantic but if we didn't do it, we'd be besieged by spammers.

    Funny thing, when I search I get this - I don't think Ive seen that on G+ before.

  • Jim Newberry: No problem. In Webmaster Tools, in structured data testing tool, for publisher I get "This is not a verified publisher markup." with my G+ business page entered. But when I go to that G+ business page, it says that I have verified my business. Any thoughts on that? Or should I start a new thread?
  • Jim Munro: I think it would be better to leave it here so we can look at both sites and offer a better answer.
  • David Saunders: Put your full name and address in the footer 12 pt Arial and fully viewable. Put it on every page along with the LA phone extension and hook it all up with your Google+ page where you should have a back link to your business website.  ; I don't need to say never cheat !  ;David ;
  • Jim Newberry: Thanks David. Does it have to be Arial, and include my street address? Including the city, state, and zip isn't a problem but not sure I want to use my street address.
  • David Saunders: No not necessarily ariAl that's just something I've always done some.cheats try. To do a black on black trying to fool google I'm not sure it is a good idea to hide your address when I was in the US everything I did was transparent I would slow up on facebook and twitter to concentrate on Google plus d
  • Jim Munro: I hope I am not misunderstanding what you have said +David Saunders ;but just to be clear, hiding text is an exercise only carried out by stupid people these days. :)

    I'll be guided by what our panelists say on Thursday night, but I think David's idea of adding an address is valid even if you did not have this problem. It inspires confidence in both the user and googlebot. I would expose as much as you are comfortable with.
  • Jim Newberry: Jim, I think David was saying not to hide text.
  • Jim Munro: If there's a way to muck things up, I can usually find it, Jim. :)

    Your question is scheduled early in the runlist tonight. +Edwin Jonk ;will post a link to it during the night.
  • Jim Newberry: :) Thanks for the heads up. ;
  • David Saunders: Yes I was don't hide the text :). It was late and I had brain freeze.. I've been doing seo for a long long time. Started in 99 quite by mistake. I have to admit to never knowingly cheating! D

    The cuetimes listed on this page are functional while the live broadcast continues and also once Youtube has finished processing the public broadcast. Processing time varies between 6-24 hours. During this period the clip is viewable in full but the cuetimes cannot be relied on.
  • James Simmonds: As far as I know Google judges your business at least in part by citations and theretofore when you move you should also change any citations you may have like yelp and maybe try to get some local ones as well. It will no doubt take time. ;
