Are there negative SEO implications from using display=`none` to hide content?

Using display="none;" to hide small portions of content (post excepts and etc.) when rendering responsive design for mobile devices. Are there negative SEO implications??

  • Frank Ludriks: As long as you present the same content to Google's mobile bot as you do to other mobile users, you won't be penalized (if that's what you mean)
  • Edwin Jonk: The OP is talking about responsive design [1]. However it is okay to serve mobile users a different site then desktop users. Besides responsive design design you can use a dedicated site (m-dot site) or dynamic HTML on the same URL. For both you can sniff the user agent and serve the correct site. This sniffing includes Googlebot and Googlebot Mobile [2]. This will not get you penalized.

  • Lori Eldridge: I think it was Matt Cutts (google engineer) that said if you set up the main site with a canonical tag then it won't be affected by what's on the mobile version.
