Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Dave Elliott on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 04/01/2014).

Has anyone got a filter that is definitely working for seomalt.com?

semalt(dot)com! They are the current bane of seoness. I have tried blocking them and taking them out of my analytics a few different ways and nothing seems to be working.

I might just be being thick(it is quite likely) but has anyone got a filter that is definitely working??

  • Peter Nikolow: You can quick block them with .htaccess rule.
  • Simon Fryer: Hi +Dave Elliott ;

    You can filter them out using a custom advanced segment in analytics. ;
    Traffic source -> Does NOT contain -> Semalt.com

    Only problem is that you can't then combine this with other advanced segments, unless you roll them into one custom segment. ;
  • Dave Elliott: I have no htaccees file as we are on windows servers and things like that are massive hassle within our cms/iis. ;

    I hadn't considered advanced segments, decent shout if no one has a working filter.
  • Simon Fryer: It aint perfect but it does the job :)
  • Dave Elliott: My only concern is on a few accounts clients have access to their analytics and won't necessarily understand segments, so might start getting confused as to why the data is different to my reporting.

    It will do as a work-around if I can't find better though, so thanks. Will certainly do for internal stuff!
  • Ian Dixon: funny you should mention them +Dave Elliott ;because I have seen them in Analytics and was going to check out who they are a bit later. Might leave it now then :)
  • Simon Fryer: Cool. As far as I know the only thing it's impacting is referral traffic. Let me know if you come across a decent filter +Dave Elliott. ;
  • Dave Elliott: +Ian Dixon ; its a keyword ranking tracker tool(allegedly anyway, lots of speculation) that everyone is getting annoyed at for skewing their stats.

    Basically if they are legit then they don't know how to code a crawler but I rather suspect they are doing something silly/blackhat/illegal/not nice.
  • Simon Fryer: Either they don't know how to code a crawler, or they have embarked on an ingenious awareness campaign :)

    Hey +Semalt ;care to fill the SEO community in?

  • Peter Nikolow: +Dave Elliott ;you can use web.config on IIS. It provide features like .htaccess or .htpasswd but with different syntax.

    Here you can find more:

    Here is similar code that blocking hotlinking SWF files
    <rule name="Prevent SWF hotlinking" enabled="true">  ; ;
     ; <match url="/ContentCache/.*.swf$" ignoreCase="true" />  ; ;
     ; <conditions>  ; ;
     ;  ; <add input="{HTTP_REFERER}" pattern="^http://(..)?myurl.com/.$" negate="true" />  ; ;
     ; </conditions>  ; ;
     ; <action type="Rewrite" url="/Content/Flash/NoEmbedFromCacheSWF.swf" />  ; ;
    </rule>  ;

    I believe that this is good starting point to tweak it for your needs.
  • Lori Eldridge: I won't even work on a site unless it has htaccess available, i.e., apache server. I had a client spammed by smalt and they disappeared right away after blocking them in htaccess.

    The cuetimes listed on this page are functional while the live broadcast continues and also once Youtube has finished processing the public broadcast. Processing time varies between 6-24 hours. During this period the clip is viewable in full but the cuetimes cannot be relied on.
  • Dave Elliott: they are mainly showing up in 'aqusition' in the traffic and referrals type reports. On some of the sites i am managing the show up in analytics at around 30% of total referrals, which is just ridiculous.

    As +Simon Fryer ;suggested i am now using an advanced segment to take them out of my GA reporting but would much prefer to use a filter on the profiles which clients have access to so that they don't see any discrepancies in the data ;
