Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Emily EPX on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/06/2013).

Will it cause any SEO problems if I remove a menu item from my navigation?

Will it cause any problems for me SEO wise, if I remove a menu item from my navigation.  I`ve been told I might have too many menu items, so I`m gonna test removing some of them.

I`m not deleting any pages, just removing them.  making them basically unreachable, unless the link is found somewhere else.
Thanks

  • Emily EPX: I forgot to mention, I'm using wordpress.  ;Not sure if that matters or not.
  • Janna Maica Feliciano: My advice is to check which of your site's menu is performing less in terms of the number of generated clicks first. If you have Google Analytics installed, you can check the performance under Behavior, then In-Page Analytics. Then from your own analysis, you can decide which menu is not worth keeping ;) Hope that helps
  • Dave Elliott: Orphaned pages are very bad. At least link to them in your text or something.
  • Ranu Jain: Yes, I agree with Dave here. Would say remove only unimportant menu items or try to adjust them in the footer links.
  • Emily EPX: Thanks everyone.  ;I will probably still be linking to them from blog posts and possibly a footer menu later on.  ;But I was concerned that pulling a page from the main navigation would be bad.
