Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Chris M Cloutier on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/05/2013).

Nofollow links and all in one seo: What if I have a page, that has an affiliate link and an internal link to a page on my site?

I`m using a wordpress plugin(all in one seo) among its features is one that allows me to no-follow links I publish.  The problem is, what if I have a page, that has an affiliate link and an internal link to a page on my site?

If I just use the no-follow feature of the plugin it no-follows all links.  This is probably a really dumb question, but...
Thanks guys

  • Simon Fryer: Hey +Chris M Cloutier  ;. Rather than adding nofollow to the page in question, you need to add it to the specific link. You just need to add rel="nofollow" to the code after the link URL. ;
  • Chris M Cloutier: Okay, I wasn't sure if it would be ok to do that or not.  ;Also, I didn't know where to place the rel=  ;So it just goes in after the ".com"?
  • Simon Fryer: just a href=" http://example.com " rel="nofollow"
  • Chris M Cloutier: Sweet!  ;Thanks +Simon Fryer  ;I appreciate it.
  • john matthew: +Simon Fryer  ;Thanks Simon i appreciate your answer would you please explain little more about why one should put nofollow attribute in links and which internal links must be nofollow?
  • Simon Fryer: Hey +john matthew  ;In the past it was a way to manipulate how PR flowed through your site (PR sculpting), but it's a dead tactic now. In most cases there's no reason to nofollow internal links. Adding it to external links prevents PR from being passed on to the external site. For example, all of the external links on Facebook are no follow. This is because the site owners don't have editorial control over links, and don't want to pass PR to bad neighbourhoods. ;
  • Simon Fryer: Similarly, advertisments (in Google's eyes) shouldn't pass PageRank - that's buying links. Therefore site links to advertisers' websites should be nofollowed.
  • john matthew: +Simon Fryer  ;Thanks Simon that was helpful!
