Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Jamin Rak on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 10/31/2013).

I have been approved for a vanity google+ URL, but I do not like the one they`ve assigned me.

Google just informed me that I have been approved for a vanity google+ URL, but I do not like the one they`ve assigned me. Does that mean I am stuck with what they offered? It states once I confirm it can never be changed. So should I wait? Will this make a big difference for future SEO optimization? Thanks

  • Federico Sasso: I decided to take it, as I think in the future the perception of professionalism it communicates will matter, a little like what is having your own site domain is today compared to the times you had a sub-domain and deep folder in hosting.... no, not really, it has been vanity! (and am curious to see how much will they charge, if they'll ever do it).

    During the steps of the assignment process I've been asked if I wanted to propose an alternate vanity URL. ;
  • Jamin Rak: I didn't see the option to propose an alternate. At which point did they ask you that? +Federico Sasso I got as far as click to agree with terms and "you can not change this in the future, are you sure" message... they offered me a vanity url of my personal name, not my business name. I think it would be great, but the vanity url was for my Google places page not my personal g+ account...
  • Federico Sasso: +Jamin Rak, LMT  ;I'm afraid I didn't have the foresight to take screenshots, but I definitively had that option somewhere along the way, before the telephone code thing (and - I think - after the first "you can't change it in the future" message).
    Can anyone keen to get its own vanity inflater mind to take some screenshots?
  • Guna Nadar: Hi...
    You can claim vanity url for your G+ page, your account and also your local page. But there are certain requirements to be met by your pages inorder to claim the vanity url. If your pages are found to meet those requirements, then you are eligible for vanity url.

    You have the option to change the vanity url given by Google before you confirm the verification. Once you have confirmed the vanity url, you have options only to change capitalization, accent or diacritic of the url and not the entire url itself. So its upto you to choose the right url ; before you verify.
