Dumb SEO Questions

Is there a way to keep the ranking of a blogger site when moving to Wordpress?

Hi all!
I have an old blogger site that I currently don`t use anymore, and started a wordpress on a new own domain.

I read that I could use meta refresh on blogger to do a 301 redirection, but I will not duplicate information on both sites (old data keeps on blogger)... so I think it`s not best approach.
Also read that I could use link rel tag to indicate new domain, but I`m not sure if it will work.

Is there a way to keep ranking of blogger into wordpress?

  • W.E. Jonk: First a meta refresh isn't a HTTP 301 permanent re-direct. I do know that you cannot do a 301 to an external URL on your Blogger site (blogspot). Additionally you cannot do a 302.

    Not sure but I think you can also do a javascript re-direct instead of a meta refresh. Both are not recommended by Google Search. However since you do not have any option I would go for your proposed meta refresh. Because my personal view is that search engines are more capable of seeing the  ;meta redirect whereas the javascript needs to be executed by the crawler. ;

    However it will take a long time before search engines like Google to really recognize it....

    So the short answer is: No you cannot move from Blogger.
  • Diego Rucci: Thank you +W.E. Jonk .
    For end-users I posted a last entry indicating new domain. Feels more correct than redirecting or forcing them using javascript.
    Do you know if link rel tag would be useful for robots and crawlers? I mean, stating that blogger site is no longer active?
    I do have in mind that will take some time for new domain to get scored
  • W.E. Jonk: I am not an expert with Blogger. But I don't think you could use the rel canonical to point to an external page on Blogger. As far as I know, Blogger only allows you to point the rel canonical within the site, so no cross-domain rel canonical on Blogger...
  • James Payne: It is possible to use canonical links to point to a different domain and Google will try and follow them. That said i dont use blogger so i am unsure you can set it up to do that.
  • Diego Rucci: Thank you +James Payne . Blogger allows you to edit templates, so I can add canonical links to <head> section.
  • W.E. Jonk: +Diego Rucci  ;I did test this with:

    <b:if cond="data:blog.url == &quot; http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/&quot ;"><link href=" http://www.example.com/ " rel="canonical"/></b:if>

    First you need to do that for every page. Second there will be a duplicate rel canonical, one from Blogger and one the condition. Especially that duplication keeps me wondering what Googlebot will do.

    Unless you know a better way?
  • Diego Rucci: interesting... I didn't know that. Think I need to read more. Thanks +W.E. Jonk  ;
