What will happen if I don`t provide meta description to the webpages of my site?

What will happen if I don`t provide meta description to the webpages of my site?

I have seen that Google provides snippet`s content acording to the query and show most relevent sentence from the page. But with my little experience and not much resource and time, I can`t verify this.

Dear +Jim Munro, +Tim Capper, +Edwin Jonk and all, many a times, I post a query here which is actully a statement and I want that you seniors with vast experiences in the area suggest or support. This is my way of learning. ?

I have seen that Google provides snippet's content acording to the query and show most relevent sentence from the page. But with my little experience and not much resource and time, I can't verify this.

Dear +Jim Munro, +Tim Capper, +Edwin Jonk and all, many a times, I post a query here which is actully a statement and I want that you seniors with vast experiences in the area suggest or support. This is my way of learning.
  • David Kutcher: That's what happens. Google guesses. Google also rewrites your page title, and sometimes your description (havent witnessed the description rewrite in a while)
  • Tim Capper: As per +David Kutcher ;, yes Google will fill in the blanks.

However, if you have the keyword within the content a few times, it can look very messy, illegible to a user in SERP's because they pull those sentences into the description.

I prefer to write a good description to prevent this
  • Neeraj Kumar: So +Tim Capper it is final that we should write a good and smart description always...
  • Tim Capper: Well +Neeraj Kumar ;I would  ;not say it is set in stone, its just what i prefer to do
  • Dave Elliott: If you are using the first para as your meta-description then you might as well just let google have a guess.

if you are using the first para as your meta-description you have been lazy and are generally missing an opportunity.(i have been guilty of this one :( )

    Write decent meta-descriptions!
  • Neeraj Kumar: I too prefer to have a meta description but think if I set description I may lose some SERP for other words...

Like I have a page on seo service with title "why you should hire us for seo service?" with decription "New Delhi based SEO service provider, best and experienced professionals, served 100 clients in last 7 years."

Now I will use Google Optimization, improve ranking of website, keyword research etc. in the content 2-3 times. Won't I will miss results for these phrases?
