I am having trouble deciding on my strategy for keywords, please help

I have a website with a store page and individual product pages, and am having trouble deciding on my strategy for keywords.

In my store, all of my products have a central keyword niche that they fit into that`s perfect and that I`m frequented with. The issue is, I feel like trying to rank for that same keyword on my store`s front page, as well as each individual product page might be redundant and cause a conflict of interest.... Or is it? What should I do for my e commerce store?

I want to be more specific, but due to the nature of what I do, I feel like I need to give warning first, it`s slightly adult in nature, but I can get more specific if needed...

~Thanks?

  • Greg Baka: Hi +Sylwyn Fey ; - I have two ecommerce stores that each focus on a specific type of goods, but have a handful of individual product pages. Our strategy has been to focus on making the individual product pages rank rather than the homepage.

    Why? The listing of a product page in the Google results will attract many more clicks than the listing of a homepage just because the wording can be more focused on what the searcher was looking for.

    This is a long term strategy. A fairly new store will mostly appear in the search results with a homepage listing because in the beginning most of the strength and incoming links will be there. Later, as your site gains strength, the product pages will appear in the search results instead.

    Until your site gets strong, you may have to use Adwords to get sales. After 7 years, we still use our best performing Adwords campaigns - even though we also have first page results for the same basic terms. It's more profitable than turning off the ads.
  • joseph casto: Great question and answer, I have been struggling with this myself on a site that has many individual products and also features popular products on the homepage. ;
