Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by John Pitcher on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 08/22/2014).

Off-topic pages.

A couple of years ago, I got "carried away" and created an off-topic page of sayings (unrelated to the web design site) and these sayings got pinned across about 300 Pinterest accounts and a couple of blogs taking images from Pinterest with (off-topic) anchor text.  The page has a high bounce rate as there are no other related pages for viewers to jump to.

Will this off-topic page (and off-topic anchor text links) be damaging my site by diluting the main "web design" theme? If so - as I can`t remove the Pinterest links without removing other on-topic Pinterest links - should I just delete the page and have a bunch of about 300 or so broken incoming links??

  • Greg Baka: Keep the page. Having a wide variety of anchor text in your links is now better than the old goal of having a narrow concentration of money phrases.

Experiment with adding something to the page to keep people from bouncing. An easy way would be to split the list of sayings into 2 pages and put a big "Click for more fun sayings" button at the bottom of the first list. Also put some compelling links to your home page, or to an interesting blog page of yours, or to a new "Beginner's Guide to having a website made for you" page you create.

One of my ecommerce sites has a popular multi-page article that is only vaguely related to what I sell, and it seems to help my SEO a lot.
  • John Pitcher: Many thanks +Greg Baka ;- the variety of anchor text was part of my original thinking (plus enjoyment of creating the sayings) but I wasn't sure if I was diluting the main "web design" content of my site?
