How can i start optimizing a blog?

i have started my career as an seo, with knowledge about web application development, and basic concepts of seo about basic link building strategies
the main thing i come across actually when iam going with building strategies is iam unable to fin the things i have done on the search pages,
how can i start optimizing a blog can you please give me suggestions beside how i can motivate my self to become expert in the field of SEO, and also few suggestions on up gradation of my skills to become an expert in the field of SEO
