Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Stephen Mitchell on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/14/2013).

Is there anywhere else that has a tool that allows me to find top keywords searched online?

Google Adwords was a great tool for looking for top/popular keywords but has been replaced with Keyword Planner. Keyword planner cannot be accessed unless you have an adwords account (Before I could just play around with it). Is there anywhere else that has a tool that allows me to find top keywords searched online?

  • Andy Wigglesworth: Altavista?
  • Stephen Mitchell: I thought Altavista died back in June?
  • Andy Wigglesworth: heh, sorry +Stephen Mitchell ;- i probably should have added a wink after :)
  • Stephen Mitchell: +Andy Wigglesworth ;Ahhh lol, yeah phew! Made me think this was the wrong place to ask that question hahaha
  • Rob Maas: I think it also works with an AdWords Account that is not active.
  • Stephen Mitchell: Okay I set up an Adwords account and have been playing around with it. I'm not a fan of the new setup, nor do I like constantly being reminded that I can or should set up an ad with them. Oh well, it's the best option out there right now.
  • Brent Wildman: I might be one of the few, and I wasn't a fan at first, but I actually like the new Keyword planner. It has a much better workflow and the data seems to be more accurate. That being said, here are some alternatives that can also compliment your findings in keyword planner:

    http://ubersuggest.org/
    http://www.bing.com/toolbox/keywords
    https://www.youtube.com/keyword_tool
  • Frances Berry: Wordstream reviewed 8 free keyword tools back in September so you may find this useful - ;http://www.wordstream.com/blog/ws/2013/09/18/best-keyword-research-tools#. There are other paid tools but unless you need them on a professional level probably best to go with the free versions - a lot of keywords come down to common sense and realising the variation of the wording humans use in search
  • Stephen Mitchell: +Frances Berry ;Thanks for sharing that. Yeah common sense is the best tool, but sometimes you need a little inspiration and it's nice to see numbers to support the words being used.
  • Frances Berry: Absolutely +Stephen Mitchell we all need inspiration good luck in your quest :)
  • Dave Elliott: Its not on that article but I quite like market samurai for keyword stuff. Dont like it for finding keywords but the stats stuff is great
