Is ranking through submission based SEO a bad idea?

Good morning fellas, Hope you have a HAPPY WEEKEND:)
I have dumbest question of all time....! Is ranking through submission based SEO a bad idea? I was told that, Its entirely a bad idea to just go with it....! Please, a suggestion would be helpful....!?

Amaan Rizwan: Bad idea, it's link doing suicide. And not al directories are good.
Lori Eldridge: If you're talking about submitting to search engines that should be ok as those are not actual links. However submitting to directories should only be to a few quality directories with a focus relevant to your business.
