Is there something I need to do with structured data to attempt to get my featured image of a post to show up in SERPs, rather than my G+ image?

My website is set up to have a new quote on a post every day. The most important part of my post is the unique image I create with that quote. I would like to have that image shown in the SERPs like I have seen some videos. I understand there is no guarantee that the image would actually show up but I think it would be better to have that show up.

Randy Wilson: As far as I am aware you can have your Authorship image show, star-ratings show, or a video-thumbnail. I dont think i've ever seen a featured-image show in the SERPs.
