Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Greg Bella on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/22/2013).

Is it OK to add someone else`s video and provide a transcript?

Question for the group. If I embed someone else`s video (relevant to the content on my page) and add a transcript of this video, is there any negative SEO associate with this?  The video content in question isn`t necessarily mine, but it`s absolutely relevant to other content on my site. Any thoughts?  Guidelines on how best to handle this situation??

  • Jim Munro: I don't think so, Greg, but I do not know for sure.

There are about 20 sites doing more or less the same thing to dumbseoquestions (dot) com and I think it might help us more than it hinders us. It must at least expose us to a wider audience.

It does not seem to be doing them any harm , anyway.
  • Dave Elliott: Personally id give them a link saying where it was from originally, but, I cant see any harm as long as yoh aren't implying it is your video.
  • Matt Staton: Biggest concern would be copyright infringement.

    Good SEO play.
  • Matt Staton: Also use Schema.org markup too.
  • SKI USA INC: 1) I think you must contact with the person who has originally shared and informed him/her that you have embed his video for your blog.
    2) Mentioned him in your content as a reference for your blog.
    3) Give his part of credit by giving a back link or mentioning him.
This will prevent you from penalising your website. Thanks
