  • Sanyam Khurana: I want to transfer the articles from my old wordpress blog to a new one.

    How to do it if I don't want Google, and copyscape to rank my blog as a copied content site. Both blog belongs to me, so how is it possible to do this?
  • Andy Wigglesworth: There's an export feature you can use, it will export it as an xml file I believe, then you can import using a plugin on the new one.

    Either that, if you have access to the database, you could export the wp_posts and import that.

    Obviously you'll have to keep an eye on pictures etc etc.

    Are they self hosted wordpress blogs or on wordpress dot com
  • Sanyam Khurana: +Andy Wigglesworth ; They are self hosted WordPress blogs.

    I know exporting and importing is just a matter of few clicks, but what I exactly want is do it in SEO friendly way. so that Copyscape don't rank it as a copied work on both my blogs. I can put a redirection on my previous blog, would it be enough?
  • Jörg Barth: Add both domains to Google webmaster tools. Forward old domain with htaccess to new domain with statuscode 301. Then use the 'address change' form in GWT to tell Google the move.
  • Andy Wigglesworth: Ahh, i should've read your question properly (I'll blame the two pints of beer I've had)

    You can use a 301 redirect by using a htaccess file on your original domain to point every old url to the corresponding page on your new domain - this is the best way.
  • Andy Wigglesworth: Ahh, I see +Jörg Barth ;beat me to it :p - I still blame the beer!
  • Sanyam Khurana: I don't want to close down my previous blog, I would use it for my personal stuff, but I need to move some articles... +Andy Wigglesworth +Jörg Barth ;
  • Andy Wigglesworth: Ah, ok, perhaps I need more beer to make me concentrate harder, I may test this out.

    What you can do then, keep the article on both the old and new.

    Use rel="canonical"

    *Can rel="canonical" be used to suggest a canonical URL on a completely different domain?

    There are situations where it's not easily possible to set up redirects. This could be the case when you need to migrate to a new domain name using a web server that cannot create server-side redirects. In this case, you can use the rel="canonical" link element to specify the exact URL of the domain preferred for indexing. While the rel="canonical" link element is seen as a hint and not an absolute directive, we do try to follow it where possible.*

  • Erik Westesen: Do they both need to be searchable? If not, add a noindex meta tag on every duplicate post on one of the blogs, then at least google won't index it.
  • Erik Westesen: Oh! Better yet- use repost.us! It embeds your content in an iframe, so it's viewable on the second blog, but not duplicate content. We use repost.us to put our main website articles on tumblr, very handy.
  • Sanyam Khurana: I want the posts to be searchabe on new blog, and want that if by mistake, someone opens the url of post on previous blog he should be redircted to new post url on new blog.

    I don't want copyscape or google to categorize it as copied content. They are original content.
  • Sanyam Khurana: +Erik Westesen ;
  • Andy Wigglesworth: I think you are over thinking this +Sanyam Khurana ;-

    You have two blogs.

    Old - some articles need to redirect users to new blog

    New - needs to searchable (no reason it should'nt be).

    You need to pick one of the below to suit your needs.

    1 - 301 Redirect - which redirects the user automatically to the desired url and also tells google, hey, this is where this content is now

    2 - A canonical url - it doesn't redirect a user, but it tells google which is the preferred domain

    3 - A no-index - which tells google not to index a certain article

    If you are concerned with implementing any of these suggestions, you can do most by using wordpress plugins -

    Yoast for example will let you choose the Canonical Url and or Noindex a certain post.

    There a is 301 redirection plugin you can use if you don't like playing with the .htaccess file.

    If none of this is not what you want, I can only assume you are not asking the right question for us to answer. ;
  • Sanyam Khurana: Thanks all, I'll look into this, I think, it can be done... Thanks again.
