Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Ranu Jai on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 02/28/2014).

I have a question regarding Sitelinks.

Hello People,

I have a question regarding Sitelinks.

I had demoted the less important Sitelinks from my website long back but I still see them in SERPs. I am aware of the fact that these Sitelinks are automated and Google doesn`t guarantee that these demoted links will never appear.

Would like to know that does this "Demoting" option works? Did this work for anyone of you?

TIA?

  • Hyderali Shaikh: Yes, it worked for me. But, taken a long time to disappear. Also, what i found that it doesn't disappear but get replaced by some other links which was actually useful than the one demoted.
  • Ranu Jain: Thanks Hyderali.

    Yes, these demoted links get replaced by other links but again Google decides which link will come. ;
  • Wilson Calaham: It takes time, you can demote folders also, not to be listed, and get rid of all sub links
  • Collin Davis: Google also take into account the backlinks to the website for gauging the authority of those pages and this includes both inbound and outbound links.

    So naturally if it is present in the header or footer, it will have a large no of inbound links.

    So steps that you can undertake - Try reducing the no of inbound links pointing to the page, if its a login or registration page, then no follow those pages.

    Those anyways aren't valuable to the search engines.
