  • Aamir Siddiqui: Please forgive my ignorance but can anyone tell me what the benefit of having a Static IP address vs a Dynamic IP. Thanks
  • Dave Elliott: In terms of reporting, it make filtering your own IP address possible in google analytics(other analytics platforms are available) so that your stats aren't skewed due to you and your colleagues visiting your site.

In terms of development, we only let clients have FTP access to their site if they have a static IP address for security reasons, so there is that.

There aren't any genuine SEO benefits though.
  • Matt Staton: I read that if you share a block of dynamic IPs with spammy web sites it could negatively impact your SEO. That was a long time ago.
  • Archie Watt: If you're referring to the IP address you use to browse the web, then I agree with what Dave said.

If you're referring to the IP address of your website...

IP addresses of websites are always static.  ;If they used dynamic IP addresses, then DNS couldn't work.  ;Your site's IP address can either be shared (with other sites on the same server) or dedicated (just for your site).

Sharing an IP address with spammy sites is not something I'd worry about.  ;Google have said in the past that it's only in the extreme cases that they'd consider action on an IP address as a whole (e.g. 499 spam sites, 1 good site).  ;Most websites out there are on shared hosting and share an IP address with hundreds or even thousands of other sites.
