Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Johnny Base on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 12/11/2013).

How can I make sure the PR travels to the new url?

I have a client. They have a PR3 website. It could not be found. I did minor on page optimization now it`s on page one for many terms keywords. I also got them a new url which is more optimized.  we did a 301 redirect from their old domain name on godaddy to their new IP address.

How can I make sure the PR travels to the new url?

Should I have not changed the old url with the PR3?

 I did this with another site and it worked great but the other site had a PR of 0 so PR did not matter so much. Also all the links from the old site now go to the new domain home page.

Do I need to go back to go daddy and input every url from the old site had and send it to a corresponding page on the new optimized url?

the old site has 627 pages I condensed that down to about 15 pages.  I was going to go put this question to google webmaster forum. Then some foresight came my way and I realized the error of my thinking and directed the question towards a wiser group of professionals. Looking forward to hearing your answer. Thanks !?

  • Patrick Rabanser: I didn't watch the video so probably I'm just repeating what you heard.
    First of all PR that dissapates trough 301 Redirects is the same as in Links.
    So in my understanding if you redirect a Page with PR 3 you have to multiply per 0.85 and the result (2.55) will be the PR you have on your new page!
    I'm a bit confused did you change the Domain name or only the URLs?
    If you get a new domain name you should have a good reason otherwise its not a good idea.
    YES you should redirect every single page to the new one, that would be the best, with 627 URLs you have a lot to do, so you could redirect all the pages that have inbound Links and the most important pages of your Website!
  • Johnny Base: I created a new url which is more optimized. It has a few keywords in it as opposed to the company name. How long will it take for the PR rank to transfer to the new url. The problem is the old site is on squarespace which does not allow site migration so I just created a new site and figured I would create a new more optimised url. But the PR rank has not transferred and its been almost a week so I think i'm going to put the new site on the old url. I can't 301 page to page because the new site does not have 627 pages but I can send each page to a page which matches. Do you think I should just use the old url. it's much shorter than the new one and is the company name.  ;
  • Patrick Rabanser: You have to wait for the next PR update and no one can tell you when it will be!
    Don't count on changes in the toolbar PageRank anytime soon!
    What's the old URL and what the new one?
