How to get Google to drop the HTTPS version of my page in favor of the regular version?

There was a glitch on my site and it resulted in Google indexing the HTTPS version of my page. This page was never designed to be HTTPS so there are some errors that show up when users land on that page. I need to get Google to drop the HTTPS page and pick up the regular HTTP version of that page. Do any of you know how to get Google to drop the HTTPS version of my page in favor of the regular version?

The page is rank #2 on SERP so I`m trying to fix the problem with the least amount of collateral damage. I don`t want to go to Webmaster Tools and request they purge the page. What are some alternatives so that the right page gets into SERP and I can still main my high ranking. Thanks for any advice.

  • Andy Wigglesworth: I guess if you don't need HTTPS at all for any part of your site you could change your htaccess file (assuming your on linux).

I have no idea if the above stackoverflow would work in your situation, you would have to test it out.
  • Guillaume Boucher Bélanger: noindex the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noindex
  • Peter K. Lam: I believe the site is .NET (ASP) and not Linux. I'm having my developers look into this. I'm not sure if noindex would work because the regular page and HTTPS are essentially the same page. Wouldn't doing that block the spiders off both versions of the page?
  • Andy Wigglesworth: +Jim Munro  ;uses and sets up windows servers - he may be able to help with 301 redirects from https to http - if you decide go that route, or there's probably some help online somewhere.
  • Guillaume Boucher Bélanger: Yeah I gues noindexing that page wouldn't be recommended
  • Ryan Dinelle: If it's a windows server, use the IIS Manager to handle the 301. This article should help: http://www.mcanerin.com/en/articles/301-redirect-iis.asp

Also, ensure you have no https mentions in your sitemap.xml file. Google should update things within a week or so, depending how frequently you're crawled.

    Cheers!!
