Different results for our search even though we are 10 feet away.

Hello everyone,

I currently own a SEO agency located in Quebec city Canada and it`s been a first wonderful year of SEO, with ups and downs.

I have a fairly simple question for you guys:

So my coworker and I are making the same keyword search on google with a private browser and without being connected to our google+ page. The thing is that there is different results for our search even though we are 10 feet away.

Any thoughts on that??

  • Tim Capper: This is a clear point on why "keywords" are becoming pretty imperfect. I would say that the only logical idea would be that they are picking up 2 different data centres. My other thought was "are these desktop or labtops" could one have been used say at home and the IP based search is beiging triggered based on previous IP. Then the question should be: How to tell Google to spread the best results throughout Quebec city ? The answer to this is to reinforce it on the clients site. Address in footer - linked to place page ( google+ local) Publisher tag attached - G+ business page to also have address listed Reinforce location with blog updates of latest projects. : Striped hanging curtains for Loft Apartment downtown Quebec ..... kind of thing

  • Nishant Desai: Have you checked before from the same systems?  ;It might be fetching from cookie..!  ;Not sure though..
  • Ovidiu Burduja: Try using a rank tracking tool, Guillaume, such as moz.com , authoritylabs.com or semrush.com -- the latter lets you check your rankings without having to login to anything.
  • Guillaume Boucher Bélanger: I already know about those rank checkers but I'm trying to understand why there is such a difference between both computers.

Because people looking for my client won't ; look in moz to find results.
  • Andy Wigglesworth: Are both search locations set the same?

  • Guillaume Boucher Bélanger: Yeah locations are both in Quebec city, QC
  • Jon Dunn: You may be pulling results from different google data centres even if you are next to each other. Failing that there is all manner of personalisation and caching which you may have overlooked and may be effecting things...
  • Matt Staton: Google has thousands of data centers. You're hitting different data centers.
  • Joseph Paulino: I agree with +Jon Dunn and +Matt Staton.
  • Guillaume Boucher Bélanger: Ok it makes sens but.... A client of mine an interior designer in quebec city has different results for "designer d'intérieur" which means interior designer. On my computer with private browser and no cache and no cookies she appears in the bottom of the first page and with the same keywords she doesn't even appear in the first ten pages with the computer of my coworker.

I've made some test and him too. I had to same results on a different computer. On his part, he made the search from an other computer and had the same results has he did in the first place, but on another computer he had the same results as I did in the first place.

Then the question should be: How to tell Google to spread the best results throughout Quebec city ?
  • Aamir Siddiqui: Are you checking the SERP from google.com/ncr or google.ca? Both will show a different kind of results and personalization also matters but google.com is now on SSL too. Should it make sense now?

The answer to this is to reinforce it on the clients site.

Address in footer - linked to place page ( google+ local)

Publisher tag attached - G+ business page to also have address listed

Reinforce location with blog updates of latest projects. : Striped hanging curtains for Loft Apartment downtown Quebec ..... kind of thing
