What`s the best way to set up a blog?

Hi all,
If i want to add a blog to my actual website, so i can post original contents frequently and get better rankings, would it be a good idea to use some kind of platform like blogger, and redirect it to blog(dot)mydomain(dot)com? Or maybe its a better idea to serve the blog on mydomain(dot)com/blog and use a self hosted solution? The main idea its to make my main website rank better in serps?

  • Mimetix: Hi all,

  • Jeff Guest: I opted to put the blog on my actual website - http://www.jeffguest.co.uk - so the site has more content to rank with, as too many links from the same place won't have the same effect (correct me if I'm wrong, other commenters!)
  • Mimetix: +Jeff Guest ;i see you are using wordpress, which has blog feature by default. I made a web from scratch and i'd like to know if its better for SEO to make my own blog from scratch or using an online platform. About the link you post, plz, remove it and place it like www(dot)jeffguest(dot)co(dot)uk. Ty for your soon answer :)
  • Jeff Guest: I would say host your own blog on the same domain, so you could install wordpress in a folder in your root URL and integrate it seamlessly with the rest of the site.  ;I see what you are saying about the links FROM the blog to the site improving SEO but it's only effective as part of an ongoing link building strategy. I'd go for having content that people want to link to on your site and find other blogs to put links by either guest posting or in the comments.
    P.S. Check spelling of professional on your home page - not criticism as I could not write even a sentence in Spanish, let alone a whole website!
  • Mimetix: +Jeff Guest ;About the english version of the site, i need to do it again because it really has lots of mistakes.Thank you for pointing it out because i was procrastinating with that because my customers are mainly in spain, but ill fix it soon :).  ;So fistly, blog(dot)domain(dot)com its considered a different domain from mydomain(dot)com/blog? In this video ;http://goo.gl/v11TT they seem to answer my question, but i don't come to a conclusion.
    And secondly, if one of my pages in my domain is very popular, wouldnt that make the root domain more popular?
  • Jeff Guest: I would think domain.com/blog would be better as this will support your second point. There are advantages and disadvantages, I chose my method because, like you say, you can make your root domain more popular. Let me know what you decide...
  • Mimetix: +Jeff Guest ;i did as u said yesterday, i made a blog theme for wordpress based on my default design under /blog. Its quite simple but i think it will do the job. I am also adding rich snippets. tyvm
  • Unique Websites: +Mimetix ; ; ; I created my own website as a non-Wordpress site a few years back; now with the importance of blogs, I have bolted on a Wordpress blog to the back. To me this is better than an external blog - it creates fresh content for your main website and attract (hopefully) social signals and links to your main site.

    Also, if you ever want to use Pitnerest, I seem to remember that their spam filters will flag up redirects.
  • W.E. Jonk: Personally I like to have a self-hosted solution, because then I can do whatever I want. In general self-hosted is more work but more flexible. If you are clueless about installing and maintaining a site's cms a platform might be a good idea. However frequently businesses need more then what a platform offers and thereby it might be better to hire someone to do the work for you. ;

    Therefore to me, if you are serious about your business you choose a self-hosted solution. As an example of a site that started on blogger and moved away because they where successful take a look at OMGubuntu: ;http://www.d0od.blogspot.co.uk/
  • Mimetix: +W.E. Jonk ;ty vm, i already made a simple blog, nothing great but self hosted. I'll try to improve it with time, for now i think it will work, as the important part of a blog is the content rather than design.
  • W.E. Jonk: I think that is the best approach, getting a self-hosted solution and improve it over time... ;
