Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Tim Qui on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/30/2013).

Is producing content through research, proofing etc. the most productive use of time?

I`m in a bit of a conundrum. I`m currently working with clients who are driving instructors. I have done some technical SEO on their site and a bit of link building with positive results. I have now started to build rich content in the form of a blog. But herein lies my concern.

Driving instruction in and of itself isn`t a subject that is of much interest to my target audience i.e. people learning to drive. They want to know as much as they need in order to pass their test but there the interest ends. It is very much a means to an end. Sure, I can blog about various tips and techniques to help pass your driving test but they will soon be exhausted.

So I have started writing fairly detailed posts that are driving related such as how to prepare your car for winter, how to check your tyres are legal etc. The problem is, although related to my clients industry they aren`t specifically about driving instruction which is what I want the site to rank for. The posts are taking on average 3-4 hours to complete by the time I have done research, proofing etc. and I`m just concerned that this isn`t the most productive use of my time. What are your thoughts on this?

If you want to take a look at the site you can find it at wrightstart(dot)co(dot)uk.

Main keywords are "driving school Derby" and "driving lessons in Derby". If you see any other SEO faux pas that I have made please feel free to give me some constructive criticism, I`m still learning and any help is appreciated.?

  • Rotimi Orimoloye: Hi +Tim Quin ;I'll take a crack at your content creation issue, if you also take a look at my technical SEO issue here 101business(dot)tv
    Deal?
    ;)

    But seriously, the idea behind most content marketing is to be clever about content creation.
    And I guess you're already doing these, but i'll put them down anyway....

    Driving instructions is indeed a boring topic, but the latest rims are not. Neither is "Pimping Rides".
    I would think more of trying to keep the readers that I have been able to get from my link-building efforts, and less of ranking for now. ;I would also constantly attract new readers from social media (like Facebook & Instagram). ;Yes, let's be mindful that our target audience is in the 15-18 age bracket, depending on your country.
    I could also try to use a few of their slangs (but will be a bit careful about this part) especially in my crucial Lead paragraphs.

    Justin Bieber and Chris Brown recently had car accidents. I'm sure some more recent accidents have occured around the world involving teen idols. That's another area to shop for potential readers. Remember word of mouth will always be a powerful force in marketing (not necessarily word of mouth, but kids informing other kids). If you can connect all your car stories together in a way that everything points ends with driving instructions, then you are winning. The kids who can already drive love the site for cool car stuff. They tell their friends who cannot drive. :-)

    These are the best I can think of for now. Hope it is at least, slightly helpful?
    Goodluck.

    P.S.
    Some of the most inviting links on the Left Side of the page are not working when I click them. Maybe if Visitors could have a sneak peak into "maneuvers" & "virtual" that could help a bit. :-)

    Also it appears that there is supposed to be a Virtual Tour for the site.
    That will definitely be an awesome boost when it is implemented. :)
  • Rotimi Orimoloye: Also, sometimes kids could have different names for some of these things.
    Driving School, Learner Drivers, Drivers' Ed, Driving Training, IDK, etc may be good keywords to go for. ;

    Kids could also have nicknames for them. ;
  • Jim Munro: C'mon +Rotimi Orimoloye ;, you know our rules here. :)

    Please remove your link and replace it with a disabled link. ;
  • Rotimi Orimoloye: Really? +Jim Munro ;
    I must have missed something.
    I've never actually needed to......no matter, I'll get right to it. sorry. ;
  • Karen Jones: Why not write about
    -how to choose the right driving instructor,
    -preparing for your first lesson
    _fear of driving
    -now you have passed you wil really learn to drive
  • Rotimi Orimoloye: +Karen Jones ;Nice!
    Now, I actually do see a way to spin interesting posts out of these headlines you've listed.  ;

    I guess driving instruction isn't so boring after all. lol. :)
  • Tim Quin: Thanks +Rotimi Orimoloye for your detailed answer, nice of you to take the time. I have a long list of potential post ideas but you have confirmed that I am on the right track. I like your idea about including celebrities in my posts this has made me realise I need to be current in my writing too.

    In your opinion what is the best way to get new readers to a blog? Again, because of the nature of the blog I'm struggling to find suitable sites to link with.

    P.S. I'll take a look at your post now and see if I can offer any help. ;)
  • Tim Quin: Thanks +Karen Jones, great ideas, I will add them to my post list. :)
  • Karen Jones: You are welcome :) Also think about the pain points like the cost of learning to drive and with the right instructor it will save money, or you are not alone when it comes to having a bad session and what you should do about it.
    FAQ's
  • Rotimi Orimoloye: +Tim Quin ;I think social media is a great place to hunt for new readers of your target audience. I would personally attack Facebook and Instagram more than any other. ;

    A sacarstic "Driving Lessons From Justin Bieber?" Headline could draw some attention in such marketplaces....I don't know! (in such a case, the details of his accident would help) :)
    Mixing things up (serious stuff and some fun stuff) is how I would go. ;
    But then come to think of it, I guess there are still quite a few old folks out there that cannot drive.

    But concerning linking, In my country there are not many options for link building relationships since most people are oblivious to online marketing, and most domains are DA zero anyways. So I rarely think of building links. Very pathetic.

    Can you see who your competition is linking with? I would imagine that driving schools could link with auto licensing offices and maybe even cab companies. I always believe that a keen eye on copy plus good anchor text can always create relevance. Whether Penguin sees it as relevant is another matter entirely. :)
  • Tim Quin: +Rotimi Orimoloye you have some great ideas my friend thank you.
  • Unique Websites: +Tim Quin ;You're probably already doing it, but I would say Facebook and Instagram would be places to get some traffic from - some driving instructor clients of mine (I'm a web designer) get a lot of their business from Facebook.

    Everytime someone pases, they congratulate them on their page, and that person shares with their friends etc. If their success stories (and their friends) look at your site and see an interesting post, they could well share that as well.
