  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: Will this be the future of link building bloggers to avoid talking about any tactics out of FUD?
  • Jim Munro: It seems to me that Google has not thought this through. Is it more likely that this is just Matt Cutts' little-man syndrome gone wild rather than a measured plan?

    Eventually, I think they will come to realise that driving the most creative minds underground is just about the dumbest thing that could have happened.

    I'll persevere because I'm not smart enough to do anything else, but I'm fairly sure that I'll still be publishing long after Matt Cutts has been replaced.
  • Rob Wagner: Recent events have made it clear that Google has taken the position of "guilt by association" as an acceptable premise. Having profiles on communities, regardless if one has ever participated in any activities on that community, as the sole reason for dishing out penalties is a shocker.

    What will Google go after next? Why would anyone take unnecessary risks exposing themselves to possible issues that could arise in the future? ;
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: +Jim Munro: I think they have thought this through, but have come to different conclusions than the rest of us. Not saying it's right, just that they have a different view for where they think things can go.

    +Rob Wagner: You referring to Doc's penalty? If so, I think that's more just them whacking everything with a club than try to use the fly swatter appropriately vs a guilt by association.
  • Rob Wagner: I was referring to Doc and other's. I suppose you could be right about a club but some times it can be hard to tell.
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: Been in that camp, but I switched mindsets to Google having played whack-a-mole too many times now without enough successes so the big hits are coming out more and more now. They believe they have to be heavier-handed in order to inflict the changes needed (well, that and accepting a minimal false positive rate).

    Basically, whether its a human or a machine learning algo, mistakes happen. The one that admits the mistake shows the better personality and learning (for whatever that's worth).
  • Matt Raynes: +Jim Munro ;it's them kinda comments Jim that could result in your past getting outed, remember Agent Black Hat...
  • Matt Raynes: +Jim Munro ;Send him flowers.
  • Jim Munro: Fear not, Matt. I am untouchable. :)

    I have no past that I wouldn't be proud to have outed and there's nothing that can be done to me that hasn't been done already.
  • Matt Raynes: Google heaven needs people like you Jim.
  • Jim Munro: Not sure that I'd qualify to enter Google heaven.
