Dumb SEO Questions

Do backlinks need to be pointed at my homepage?

I hope this is a relevant question here. It`s about back links: If I have some very high value backlinks, but they are not linked to my home page (they are instead linked directly to another internal page that they reference) does this still have any SEO value for my home page in search rankings? Or do the backlinks need to be pointed at my homepage??

  • Jose Terrier: Hi +Angela Bothwell . Links to your inside pages are great for SEO. Among many other factors, quality links may help improve the rankings of these inside pages and your site in general.

In order to pass more link equity from these inside pages to your homepage, consider linking to the homepage from the body copy of the inside page using the keyword you target on your homepage as the anchor text. But please be careful and only do this in moderation. Hope this helps!

  • Devin Peterson: Sure it certainly helps. It's natural to have links pointing to pages other than the homepage. And as long as this particular page is linked to your home page (I don't know why it wouldn't be) then it will provide a bit of a 'boost' to your homepage as well. I wouldn't try to change the link at all if you were thinking about it, just let it be however it occurs in nature.
  • Angela Bothwell: Thank You +Jose Terrier and +Devin Peterson. This confirms what I've been learning.
  • Wakefly, Inc.: Also think of the user. Wouldn't they rather land on the inner page on your site that goes over what they clicked on rather than a generic homepage?
