Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by John Pitcher on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/19/2013).

What is the best url format?

For a company whose name is "First-name Surname Builders" who want to rank for Town-1 and Town-2 (and County-1 would also be nice although maybe not so achievable nowadays), would you have a meta title of:

First-name Surname Builders: Town-1 Town-2 County-1

or

Builders Town-1 Town-2 County-1| First-name Surname Builders

The second option is (certainly used to) be more powerful as it has keywords at the start; the first option may, in this anti-spam age, be seen as better?

Note that the customer is more interested than town than county due to travelling.

  • John Pitcher: For a company whose name is ;"First-name Surname Builders" who want to rank for Town-1 and Town-2 (and County-1 would also be nice although maybe not so achievable nowadays), would you have a meta title of:

    First-name Surname Builders: Town-1 Town-2 County-1

    or

    Builders Town-1 Town-2 County-1| First-name Surname Builders

    The second option ;is (certainly used to) be more powerful as it has keywords at the start; the first option may, in this anti-spam age, be seen as better?

    Note that the customer is more interested than town than county due to travelling.
  • Vangelis Kovaios: The second option is still more powerful, as keywords (especially in titles) are still vital elements for search engines to determine the relevance of a webpage to a search query. ;
    Now, ; regarding the anti-spam age you have mentioned, let's not forget that the number and diversity of ranking factors currently is higher than any other previous age..
  • Simon Fryer: Hi ;+John Pitcher ;.

    I doubt that any of the approaches you've mentioned are going to cause problems.

    In my experience, when targeting local search over a broad area I'd say that the county is more important than the individual towns, but that including the towns adds extra value. I'm keen to get the semantics and readability of a page title right too. ;

    So I would go for:
    "Brand Name" Builders "County" | "Town 1", "Town 2" etc...

    This also means that you can add more locations at the end to better target specific areas if needed. ;

    As ever, this is just my opinion, but this approach has been very successful for clients in the past. ;
  • John Pitcher: +Vangelis Kovaios ;Many thanks - that's my opinion as well but I thought I'd check what the experts say nowadays.
    +Simon Fryer ;- I like your semantics; unfortunately (as I have NOW added into my original question - I hadn't when you first replied) the customer is more interested in his local towns than the wider county due to reducing travelling. But I will bear this arrangement in mind for the future. I guess, given the customer's preference for working in his corner of the county, you would go for the first option??

    First-name Surname Builders: Town-1 Town-2 County-1
  • Simon Fryer: I would still go for my suggestion :)

    The model scales better and makes more sense. Town, Town, County just doesn't make sense to me.

    Here's what I see in my suggestion:

    "Brand Name" Builders "County" | "Town 1", "Town 2"

    "This who I am", "This is the area I serve" | "These are specific locations in that area" ;

    Bear in mind that Google have a phenomenal understanding of geo-location. If you're covering multiple areas within a single county I think that this is the best approach. ;
  • Emmanuel Flossie: Keep titling logical. ;
    You would search for
    "Builders in mytown"
    and not ;
    "Mytown builders"
    The second search terms has a different meaning.

    Regarding your surname, does it hold value? Do people search for John Smith Builders in Mytown or for Builders in MyTown.

    Have your name as a logo, not the content.
  • G.S. Marjara: Lagic of prospective search term is important, suggestion of +Emmanuel Flossie and +Simon Fryer are almost based on this logic, brand is important but service and location are more searched in this example. Option two is more relevent rather option cited by +Simon Fryer is better.
