(Entry was posted by Evgeniy Orlov on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/15/2013).

Should articles be in the same language as the site they are promoting?

Promoting of non-english site in the english web for the linkbuilding goal: is it basically possible? Is it worth it? If i write an articel on prweb or similar about non-english site, i write better in english or in the language of the site i write about? What do you mean about getting links from other language sites? Which experiences have you done with them? Doesn`t big G means links from another language sites are spammy?

  • Federico Sasso: I know people who disagree, but I never saw evidence it would be any issue. On the contrary, it's quite normal linking to sites in other languages.
    Just think all the times an English page is linked from non-English sites as a reference (e.g. wikipedia articles when no equivalent in local language is available, or Matt Cutts videos and Moz/SE* articles to stay in the SEO niche, and thousand other examples), why should the other way round be considered harmful?
  • Emmanuel Flossie: ranking in foreign countries while not using the native language will not make you rank, unless people search in that particular language. I suggest stick with your audience language.
  • Ranu Jain: Hi Evgeniy,

    I too had worked for a non-english website and took links from english websites. It didn't affect my site's ranking but there was a very high bounce rate from referral sites. ;
  • Evgeniy Orlov: +Ranu Jain if you took links from english websites, in which language were linking articles (and anchors) written? I'm interesting about your utilizing of anchors and keywords: is Google able by itself to translate english anchor texts / keywords and associate them with non-english site and non-english keywords?
     ;Yes, its not your fail, there must be a high bounce rate:)
