Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Ewald van der Hoop on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 11/15/2013).

Should I use a redirect or just a link from an old domain to a new domain?

If I redirect (301) a PR4 domain to a newley setup domain. Will the new domain benefit more from it than when I just place a link on the old domain?

  • Federico Sasso: It's the same, according to this Matt Cutts video.
    What percentage of PageRank is lost through a 301 redirect?
    Hope this helps
  • Ewald van der Hoop: Thanks for your answer, Federico.
  • Simon Fryer: Hey +Ewald van der Hoop ;. When you say "place a link", do you mean a canonical link or a normal one? ;
  • Ewald van der Hoop: Hey +Simon Fryer ;I meant a normal do-follow link. ;
  • Simon Fryer: Ah right, the video above compares canonical links and 301 redirects.

    In the case of a normal link, a 301 will pass far more equity to the new domain. A normal link will only send a small proportion and the old site will remain indexed. A 301 should transfer about 90% and replace the old site with the new one.

    Hope this helps +Ewald van der Hoop!
  • Ewald van der Hoop: Thanks +Simon Fryer ;
  • Federico Sasso: > the video above compares canonical links and 301 redirects

    Actually my understanding of the video is it does  ;compare normal links and 301s
    It never mentions canonical links, and indeed describes the way PR flows through normal links.
  • Simon Fryer: Ah sorry then +Federico Sasso. I've seen it before and must have confused it with a different vid.  ;
  • Federico Sasso: +Simon Fryer ;not a problem at all :)
    Besides, I find Matt Cutts' words are often ambiguous...
  • Simon Fryer: +Federico Sasso ambiguity is his speciality :)
