Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by al morris on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 02/18/2014).

I`m in the process of changing from flash to HTML on the same domain.

Hi All, I`m in the process of dumping my flash website for a HTML one and retaining  the existing domain.
1. What effect will this have on my seo?
2. I presume I will have to upload code for googlebot`s etc
3. The new site has a built in blog. Should I retain my existing Blogger blog or go with the new blog?
I know that 3 for 1 but I don`t want to hassle people to much.?

  • Jeff Guest: Hi Al, I think you are doing the right thing moving from a Flash site to a blog, I presume you'll be using a popular CMS like Wordpress or Drupal? I prefer Wordpress for SEO purposes, and for ease of use and availability of add ons. I design all my client's websites in Wordpress at the moment and everyone seems very happy.
    To answer your questions:
    1. May take a backward step but them will move up, especially if you optimise
    2. If you use Wordpress, Yoast SEO plugin will take care of most of robots requirements. Don't know if other CMS have similar applications.
    3. Keep your existing blog and link to the new site, build some links to your new site and some to your existing blog.
  • Shawn Cohen: I second the Wordpress reco: it makes Google webmaster tools and Google analytics integration really easy. Also, I would recommend the Genesis framework from Copyblogger if you can find a child theme that you like or you can customize your own design.
  • Andy Wigglesworth: I think any effect it has on SEO will be a positive one in my opinion - you are going from a site that google can't read currently to HTML - anything from now on has to be a bonus!

And hassle away, it's what were here for :)
  • Chris Gregory: I would recommend maintaining your blog on your website.  ;Blogs can help you build authority for the domain which will help your rankings.
  • al morris: Thanks for the response guys. That reaffirms my thinking.
    One further question:
Google knows I live in Ireland so I get a lot of hits from the Republic of Ireland but geographically I'm only 15 mins drive from Northern Ireland. Yet I think Google see N.I. as the U.K. So therefore I see little traffic from N.I.
How can I overcome this, as there is a large chunk of market share I miss out on.
  • Shawn Cohen: You should check out what you can do with hreflang tags to create an ie version of the site and gb version. +Ian Wortley ;can probably weigh in w/ some helpful insight on that.
  • Lori Eldridge: You might want to verify that Google never picked up links to your inside pages otherwise you may need to set up redirects in htaccess if the URLs have changed.
