I have a site that has facets in the sitemaps

I have a question, I have a site that has facets in the sitemaps, in turn, this makes the sitemaps huge. They were put in for more crawling and more unique targeted pages. I don`t believe that this may give a benefit to us, each facet page would have a urls.com/catagory?facet-page which would be a unique page more targetted at that facets.

I wanted to get others opinions about it as to me I don`t like it and think the main page should be the crawlable page and the facets are shortened down versions of the main. And have the sitemap smaller and cleaner.

anyway just thought I would ask advice and a opinion from people not involved.
