  • Like: We use pingdom for checking page down load speeds.  ;For keyword density checks SEOQuake is quick and effective.  ;What aspects are you looking to check?  ;
  • Greg Kristan: Screaming Frog. It will go through off all your pages and then you can put that into an excel document and see if there are duplicates, too long titles, etc.
  • Matt Raynes: SEO quake has a great diagnostic button that gives a good topline overview of a page.  ;SFrog is great for checking any redirect issues too.
  • Simon Fryer: In my opinion keyword density is a myth, and over optimisation isn't really an on-page issue unless you're stuffing keywords to the point that your content is illegible. ;

    The best tool is your eyes. Think of users; if it looks keyword stuffed take a few out. The number of times the keyword is mentioned on a page is of minuscule importance nowadays. ;

    If you think you're suffering from over-optimisation it's your backlink anchor text you need to look at. Ahrefs, SEMrush or Open Site Explorer are the tools you need. ;
  • Martin Pierags: If you look at recent Google updates and see a loss of visibility, you know what to do, don't you?
  • Greg Kristan: I have to disagree with +Simon Fryer ;on a few points.

    Over optimization is not just about the content. It could also mean having the keyword in the URL, H1 tag, ALT tag, Title Tag, internal links, external links etc even before you start to write the actual content. ;

    "The number of times the keyword is mentioned on a page is of minuscule importance nowadays."

    I would strongly suggest looking into Google Panda ;
  • Mike Cooke: i am not sure what you are getting at. The problem I had was a badly performing site basically the domain was toxic because of bad links, I think there is a case towards some over optimisation which I am countering but I am interested to what you have to say. But this had been going on for a while.
  • Steve Kuntz: MOZ page grader
  • Simon Fryer: +Greg Kristan ;
    Sorry, my point was a little ambiguous I think - I'll clarify. ;

    When I say "The number of times the keyword is mentioned on a page is of minuscule importance nowadays." what I mean is that an increased use of keywords will have a minimal impact on rankings, not that keyword stuffing has no consequence. I earned a lot of clients through Panda :)

    You are right though - stuffing would include various elements beyond the body, but even so it should be obvious to the naked eye. ;
  • Simon Fryer: +Greg Kristan ;I'd also say that ;URL, H1 tag, ALT tag, Title Tag are all content too. ;
  • Michael Baggelin: Simon is right, also use synonym words for better SEO ;)
  • Matt Raynes: The semantics of a website are not seen by the eye, Greg's right. Semantic elements are primary points search engines read, don't stuff these but make them relevant - header tags, alt tags and metas should all be made relevant to the page.  ;As I said, quake gives a great top line to see what's happening on a page.
  • Simon Fryer: +Matt Raynes ;view source and ctrl+f makes the naked eye work :) But yes, quake does do a good job of speeding this up.

    My point was that if a page is over-optimised in terms of on-page content (including metas) you can usually tell right away just by looking at it. ;
  • Matt Raynes: +Simon Fryer ;My eyes work perfectly well without having to view source code, quake is just one of many tools out there.
  • Ranu Jain: Hey Mike,

    Check out these two tools. I find them quite useful.
