I`m finally getting around to breaking down breadcrumbs into Microdata. What`s the policy on not anchoring a parent category?

So, I`m finally getting around to breaking down breadcrumbs into Microdata. What`s the policy on not anchoring a parent category? In this case, I have three "child" landing pages: web hosting products (band, cpanel, green). However, there is no generic higher level web hosting page itself. Must every single breadcrumb in the hierarchy be a link?

Any thoughts? What`s the etiquette? Thanks in advance.

  • W.E. Jonk: I don't think there is a specific rule. Personally I don't use breadcrumbs on the first level (i.e. home > about us) because I don't believe it will benefit my users. I do use it on the second level (i.e. home > about us >contact us). But it depends... In general if you already have a clear URL structure (i.e. example.com/about-us/contact) and you don't have deep pages
    (i.e. example.com/clothing/menswear/red/shirt/short-sleeves/omg-shirt.html)
you don't really need breadcrumbs, but it can be a nice feature...

To me, put the user first is the etiquette.
  • Seth Cole: Hey +W.E. Jonk, thanks for the feedback. I missed this yesterday somehow. My goal is to give the visitors a little extra clarity while increasing my rank. 'Ya know, two birds one stone kind'a thing. :-)
