Dumb SEO Questions

(Entry was posted by Shawn Cohe on this post in the Dumb SEO Questions community on Facebook, 10/03/2013).

Is it best practice to force lowercase their URLs and redirect the uppercase URLs to the new lowercase ones?

This is my first question to the community--thanks for your help! I`m advising a client to force lowercase their URLs and redirect the uppercase URLs to the new lowercase ones. Is that the best option or should we canonical instead since several of these pages have decent PA?

  • Simon Fryer: Hi +Shawn Cohen ;

    When you 301 redirect the PA of the donor page will be transferred to the new one (well, 90 to 95% last time I checked). ;

    As you're switching directly from uppers to lowers I'd suggest you go ahead with the 301's. There's no point having 2 version of each page with canonicals. The only instance canonicals would be a good option is if you still needed the page with uppers in the URL for usability reasons. ;

    I'd also recommend saving a version of your sitemap before the change and then re-uploading the static sitemap once the redirects are applied. That way they will get crawled and replaced faster. ;
  • Greg Baka: I agree with +Simon Fryer ; I am doing a similar URL repair (getting rid of both capitals and underscores) and doing exactly what he said.

    One other suggestion is to also use this change as an opportunity to select better words to go in the URL, and to push those best words closer to the front. For a page that converts well for the phrase "wooden pencils" change the url string ; /25654_Pencil.html over to /pencils-wooden.html
  • Shawn Cohen: Right on, thanks!
  • William Gomes: Yep agree. And as +Greg Baka ;correctly said might aswell do some optimisation while you're at it :)
  • Shawn Cohen: Yes, I agree. Thankfully the URLs are already well optimized, they just dropped the ball on the lowercase issue, trailing slashes, etc.
  • Brian Patterson: I'll jump on the bandwagon just to agree with the others - I'd advise a client to 301 the uppers in this scenario.  ;Canonical wouldn't be the right tool here.
  • Ranu Jain: I have a question here Shawn. ;

    How may pages that site has? As setting too many redirects is not good. ;
