Federico Sasso: Are you serving multiple English versions of the same content, differentiated by locale? If so, yes. alternate/hreflang is the proper tool to help the search engine serving the best content to each English speaking user, and to avoid duplicate content issues. In such case, you would want to use values as "en-GB", "en-CA", etc.
On the other side, in case you are only serving one single version of the pages for your site in English, then you don't really need alternate/hreflang (it only makes sense with multiple versions of the pages).
P.S.: not strictly related to alternate/hrefang and language localization, but make sure not to use GWT geo-targeting, if you want to target audience from multiple countries. A generic top level domain is needed (e.g. .com)
