Doing social media with the believe that Google is using Google+ or other social media platforms as direct ranking factors for SEO you are entirely on the wrong track.
Still using social media, if done right, like using the right platforms and following best practices can be extremely beneficial. It is a way to setup Public Relations and Marketing channels which can deliver a higher exposure and get naturally links from other sites, which at the end of the day, that is the primarily goal, at least as long links will continue to be very important.
Many people out there play SEO, and many become popular because they are good in self promotion strategies. But do they really know how SEO works? As many here must know already, there are also SEOs who do unethical, predatory, and nonsense work, but who do sort of mental gymnastics to convince themselves they're doing the right things.
That said, many of those SEOs out there tell a lot when a day is long or they are trying for any price to gain more business. So be careful with getting obsessed from claims of popular SEOs which are just based on correlations and not causation (evidence based) based studies.
And after all, Google would agree with me that if they used Google+ as a direct ranking factor they would fail. Why? Educate yourself and find out how many site owners are using Google+ today? That said, lets cool down and go after the facts.
According to Google they already have over 200 factors in place, even I believe they have more than 500. But lets stick to the 200. Did you already tick all those 200 boxes already?
If yes, then you might have the time to play with Social Media if as I said you only want to use them because you believe they will help you rank.
