A site catering for different languages.

this question is re: canonicals and 302...   a site caters for different languages eg. domain.com/en, domain.com/ru, etc..       the issue atm is that domain.com and domain.com/en bring up the same content so I`m concerned with duplicate content issues..   should there be a 302 from domain.com to domain.com/en  or would a canonical tag be better? ?

  • Rob Maas: Never use a 302 if it is a permanent situation. I think a 301 would be best , but canonical will also do.
  • Jaaved Khatree: hmm interesting. what they've done is placed a canonical on domain.com and domain.com/en pointing to domain.com - and then every page on domain.com/en canonicals to itself. there's no 301/302 in place. i was told by someone with more SEO experience than me to 302 the domain.com to domain.com/en but that this current setup would be ok as well - it just works differently but eliminates duplicates.  ;this is way over my head so I'm going to have to wait and see what happens over the next week or 2. thanks for your input Rob!
  • Rob Maas: Someone who advises a 302 doesn't seem to have more experience ....:(

How you set up your canonicals depends on which URL you want to show up in in the SERPs. ; Asuming you chosse domain.com/en . All canonicals must point at the same domain. ; So domain.com has a canonical to domain.com/en, and domain.com/en can also have a canonical to domain.com/en.  ;It is quite simple if you think about it.
  • Rob Maas: and if you want the domain.com to show, just point all canonicals to domain.com/en.

There won't be an advantage-disadvantage for ranking, it is just that you help Google to decide which ; URL to show :)
