Wen Dee: I am new to google + to, and have heard rankings get better the more you engage with others on G+. ;Also having a verified site and authorship is very beneficial.
Ritu Ahuja: It helps because your content gets more exposure and clicks that leads to better ranking. And if somebody re-shares your post, that is even better :)

Just being active on Google+ will notdirectly affect your rankings. However by being active on G+ you are engaging with people, and people that you engage with are more likely to read your content, if it is good, they are more likely to share your content, they are more likely to link to your content
....... and your rankings increase.
So indirectly yes, but the odd post on G+ wont do that for you.
