Dumb SEO Questions

Can I redirect without passing on any penalties?

I have a website that I feel has been hit by a panda or other google update. In the past I used a company to market me on the internet but all they did was create spammy links.  I have given up trying to rank well with this site and don`t want to use the disavow tool.  I have set up another site and want to start again.  Ideally I want to do a redirect so referral customers can  find me but I don`t want to pass on any penalties.   What do you suggest?  Paul?

  • Radha wls: Hello Paul,

The ideal choice is to redirect the old website to the new one once the penalty has been removed. If not the new website also has chances to loose its value because of the penalised website.
  • Preeti SEO: Hi Paul,
you can redirect your old website to new one using 302 redirection. With 302 redirection the link juice of old website will not pass to the new one.
  • Paul Stott: Yes but this is not an official penalty just an algorithm penalty.  ;Lots of people on the internet are saying that a redirection just passes on the penalty.  ;Other people say that having another site, even if it isn't a duplicate, google may still pass on a penalty.  ;I can't get round the fact that my new site wants to rank for the same keywords and has the same blog etc.  ;I do get lots of direct traffic  ;from referrals but I can take the risk they will search on my name and find the new site.  ;I just don't want to risk harming the new site before I have begun.
