Long tail keywords related to the competitive main keyword

For ex if my competitor is ranking for a keyword i.e, golden triangle tours and its competition is high then if I take low competitive keyword that would be related to competitive main keyword i.e golden triangle tours would be the better choice or not?

Travis Bailey: Generally, it`s a good idea to go after long tail variants. Especially if the competitor`s sites outclass your/the client`s site. There are two phrases you will hear, to the point of nausea:"Low hanging fruit", and "The long tail"."15 Ways to Avoid Dehli Belly on Golden Triangle Tours", would probably be a good example. If you`re thinking something along those lines, you might be on the right track.
