Loads of tags to the products

Hi Guys here`s my dumb seo question: an SEO buddy of mine has a wordpress site developed by another designer. The designer has added loads of tags to the products on the site which the seo software is recording as errors as they have no meta description. None of the tags are keywords with any traffic of SEO value, even if we added meta descriptions (via WP plugin) and no-index no-follow every one. My advice to my friend is to delete all the tags - do we all think this is the right thing to do?

  • Tony McCreath: If you no-index them then there is no worry about their missing meta description as they will never show up in search. ;

    no-indexing is common as they often create a lot of thin pages which can be fodder for Panda. ;

    I'd look at Analytics to see if people use them. If not you may want to remove them and in the process improve your websites usability by making it less cluttered.
  • Richard Hearne: I don't fully understand this issue, but one comment - never use NOFOLLOW internally on your site.

    Tag pages are probably better not indexed, although having the top page indexed can be OK in some circumstances. However, there are plenty of cases where tag/topic pages can deliver a lot of SEO value.
  • Micah Fisher-Kirshner: To follow-up via +Richard Hearne's point. Basically for internal links, either let the power flow or don't have the link at all. Any NOFOLLOW just means you're sending the power down a blackhole--aka waste of money.
